Would you like to train as a Family Mediator?
- Are you interested in helping families to communicate better and to reach agreements?
- Would you like to help children and parents, particularly those going through the process of separation and divorce?
- Do you have a background of working in voluntary organisations, the law, social work, counselling, negotiating or similar areas?
- Would you like to train to be a volunteer or sessional family mediator with Family Mediation West of Scotland?
Family mediation is a voluntary process in which a trained, impartial mediator helps family members to communicate more effectively, and to make their own arrangements for the future, particularly for children. Family mediation assists those involved in family breakdown, in particular parents who are separating or living apart, to communicate better with one another and to reach their own decisions about some of the issues relating to the family breakdown.
Once qualified, mediators can agree their hours of work with the Service to meet local demand and their own availability. NB Our service operates from both Kilmarnock and Glasgow offices and trainees would be expected to travel to both bases. Trainee mediators are required to complete the Certificate in Family Mediation (CFM), which requires a minimum of 500 hours of student learning. The CFM consists of two Modules; successful completion of Module One-CFM(A) enables them to begin practising as a mediator in their Service and achieve Accredited Mediator status. Accredited Mediators go on to complete Module Two-CFM(R) and achieve Registered Mediator status on the Relationships Scotland Register of Family Mediators.
Key Information
Course fee payable by trainees prior to course start: The CFM 2025 course fee is £1800. Trainees would be liable to pay this in full, in advance. Half of the fee will be refunded once Registered Mediator status is achieved.
